What is a Stroke?

A stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is disrupted, either due to a blocked blood vessel (ischemic stroke) or a burst blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). This lack of blood flow deprives the brain of oxygen and nutrients, causing brain cells to die, which can lead to long-term disabilities or even death.

There are two main types of strokes:

Ischemic Stroke: The most common type, caused by a blood clot or fatty deposit blocking an artery that supplies blood to the brain. Hemorrhagic Stroke: Occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures, leading to bleeding within the brain.

Risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, family history, and certain heart conditions.

What is a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)?

A Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), often called a "mini-stroke," occurs when there is a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain. TIAs present symptoms similar to a stroke, but these symptoms resolve within minutes to hours, without causing lasting brain damage. While TIAs do not cause permanent damage, they are a warning sign of a potential future stroke and require immediate medical attention.

Symptoms of a TIA may include:

Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg (especially on one side of the body)

Confusion or trouble speaking

Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes

Sudden difficulty walking, dizziness, or loss of balance

If you or someone you know experiences any of these symptoms, it’s critical to seek immediate medical care. TIAs often signal that a more severe stroke could occur in the future.

Symptoms of Stroke and TIA

Recognizing the signs of a stroke or TIA as soon as they occur is crucial for getting timely treatment. Common symptoms include:

Sudden confusion or difficulty understanding speech

Weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg (often on one side of the body)

Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes

Severe headache with no known cause

Difficulty walking, dizziness, or loss of balance

If you or someone you are with shows any of these signs, act FAST:
F: Face drooping – Does one side of the face droop or feel numb? Ask the person to smile.

A: Arm weakness – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms.

S: Speech difficulty – Is speech slurred, or is the person unable to speak? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence.

T: Time to call 911 – If you notice any of these signs, seek immediate medical attention.

Treatment for Stroke and TIA

The treatment for stroke and TIA depends on the type, severity, and timing of the condition. Here’s how we approach each situation:

For Stroke:

Acute Care: For ischemic strokes, we may use medications like tPA (tissue plasminogen activator) to break up blood clots and restore blood flow if treatment is initiated within a critical time window. For hemorrhagic strokes, emergency surgery or procedures may be necessary to stop bleeding and relieve pressure on the brain.

Rehabilitation: Post-stroke rehabilitation is a key part of recovery. We offer cutting edge and experimental treatments for stroke recovery such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and medical hyperbaric therapy (HBOT) alongside physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy to help patients regain lost abilities and improve independence.

Preventative Care: After a stroke, we focus on reducing the risk of future strokes by managing underlying conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol through medication, lifestyle changes, and ongoing monitoring.

For TIA:

Immediate Intervention: Though TIAs resolve quickly, they are a serious warning sign. We work to identify and treat the underlying causes, such as blocked arteries or irregular heart rhythms, to prevent a full stroke from occurring.

Medication: Blood thinners or antiplatelet medications are often prescribed to reduce the risk of blood clots.

Lifestyle Modifications: We provide personalized guidance on lifestyle changes, such as diet, exercise, and smoking cessation, to lower stroke risk factors.

Surgical Procedures: In some cases, procedures like carotid endarterectomy or stent placement may be recommended to clear blocked arteries.
