What is Vertigo and Dizziness?
Vertigo is a false sensation of spinning or movement, often accompanied by nausea or difficulty balancing. It is usually caused by issues in the inner ear or the vestibular system, which controls balance. Dizziness, on the other hand, is a broader term that can refer to lightheadedness, a feeling of unsteadiness, or the sensation that the world around you is moving or spinning.
Common causes of vertigo and dizziness include:
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): A common condition where tiny crystals in the inner ear become dislodged and cause dizziness when you change head positions.
Vestibular Neuritis: Inflammation of the inner ear, often caused by a viral infection, leading to balance problems and vertigo.
Meniere’s Disease: A chronic inner ear disorder that causes episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, and ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
Migraine-Associated Vertigo: A type of vertigo that occurs in conjunction with migraines.
Labyrinthitis: An infection or inflammation of the inner ear that affects balance and hearing.
Cervicogenic Dizziness: Dizziness caused by issues in the neck or cervical spine.
Concussion: Dizziness and vertigo caused by head trauma.
